Artist Roadmap

1. If you could project out past graduation, what is your overall career goal?

My overall career goal would be to work as a 3D concept artist at either an indie team or a AAA studio. To be honest, I think I'm leaning more towards the indie side of things, because while I like the aspects of working for a AAA studio, I like the idea of being in a small, tight knit team where I am able to do more on a prohject than I would in a corporate setting. I feel like the AAA space has also been a bit unstable as of late, and while I would love to work with a AAA studio, those jobs would be very hard to come by as an entry level artist. I would also consider working for the theme park and simulation industry, but my main goals are in the entertainment and film space.

2. If you could project out into starting your career, what sounds the most appealing to you?

This is a hard one for me, because I do enjoy doing a lot of different things. I am most interested in being a 3D concept artist. Next in the pecking order would be a character artist or a weapons/prop artist. Those are the two things I enjoy working with the most. I like hard surface and environment, and am very interested in the lighting element, but as a specialization, I think it would definitely be characters and props.

3. What are some of the top companies that you are interested in working for?

  • Fortiche (French 3D Animation Company)
  • Riot
  • Blizzard
  • Hi-Rez Studioz
  • Hoyoverse
  • Nintendo
  • Gameloft
  • Bioware
Some of these are more attainable than others.

Week 07: Animation State Machines

Character Blueprints

Animation State Machine

I managed to get most of the blueprints working, but the rig itself does not want to behave. All of the retargeted animations look fine in the editor, but as soon as it's in simulation mode, the shoulders and neck just break. Working on trying to figure this out.
